SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
It all started when Air Canada was seeking to expand its routes into the Caribbean and invited SEQUUS Director Glen Husack to take his small business expertise to Barbados. With CIDA's help, in 1971 he did a demonstration of a community-based Small Business Assistance model (a model that had its origins in rural Manitoba and has been institutionalized in almost every Canadian province) in Antigua.
Success led to a search for a local partner to whom expertise could be transferred and then adapted. This started a long association with the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity (BIMAP).

CONSULTING SKILLS
Several of SEQUUS' directors pooled their experience in large and small business consulting to create a unique contribution to the field. The Caribbean Development Bank hosted our first Consulting Skills workshop. It was held in Barbados in the early 80's and became the core of a series of new services and products offered today to anyone in the helping professions. Our CONSULTING SKILLS workshops have been presented in every province of Canada and around the world.

THE FIRST "ASSOCIATES" PROGRAM
The idea of forging links between Canadians and their counterparts in other parts of the world was first attempted by SEQUUS directors in the late 70's. The private sectors of Barbados and Manitoba became connected through a venture that saw a number of partnerships develop between individual Barbadian and Canadian entrepreneurs.

A PUBLIC SECTOR "ASSOCIATES" PROGRAM
The linking idea was extended to the public sector in 1982 with the first round of the International Management Associates Program. That program connected senior public servants in the smaller islands of the Eastern Caribbean with their counterparts in the Manitoba Civil Service. Over its lifetime, that program saw more than 120 linkages formed and the creation of a network in the Caribbean that has survived and thrived to this day. It has taken many interesting turns, the latest of which has been a focus entirely on the management of airports.

THE SEQUUS-SOUTH EAST ASIA CONNECTION
SEQUUS directors' first work in South East Asia was an evaluation of TECHNONET ASIA, an organization linking enterprise support-type agencies throughout the region. The TECHNONET partnership has survived for many years. We took the "Associates" idea to that part of the world in 1983 when we brought 28 small business specialists from Canada and South East Asia together in a program that included a visit of partners to each other's place of business for an exchange of ideas and expertise.
The consulting skills workshop followed in 1985. It was introduced to representatives from the Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, etc. in a two week workshop held in Manila. A SEQUUS instructor along with an instructor from EDS in Manila then took the program on the road and visited Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Thailand with a customized version of the program.

THE SEDCO STORY
One of the most exciting stories is the one of our involvement in the development of SEDCO in Zimbabwe. SEDCO is the Small Enterprise Development Corporation of Zimbabwe. The story begins with Glen Husack and Rudy Gibbons speaking at an international Small Business network meeting in Geneva in the early 80s. It ends in 1994 with SEDCO a fully established organization with a reputation as one of the outstanding success stories in Africa. In between are countless exchanges. The "South-South" aspects of this story alone are worth telling as Zimbabwe Small Business counselors did their internships at BIMAP in Barbados!

THE FIRST NON-PROFIT WORKSHOP
In the late 70's, Winnipeg found itself in the forefront of management training and development in the non-profit field as a result of an unpredictable series of events. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) asked a SEQUUS director to develop and implement a one-week management training program for leaders and managers in the international non-profit sector. Little did we know at that time that this would be the first step on yet another international journey. That program moved outside of Canada in 1984 as the "NGO" sector received more and more recognition and governments and other funders scrambled to provide them with assistance to develop their managerial skills. Since our first workshop in Africa in 1984, the workshop has taken us to Indonesia, the Caribbean, and to Sri Lanka in 1993.
The management workshops led to other assignments in the same field and before long, the international non-profit sector had become a significant client base.

EVALUATIONS TOO!
SEQUUS's international exposure and its expertise in management counseling and training makes it a prime candidate for conducting evaluations of organizations and their work. Our first such evaluation was of TECHNONET ASIA carried out for CIDA's Industrial Cooperation Division. The next was an evaluation of the four Provincial Councils for International Cooperation that then were in existence. Most recently, a SEQUUS director completed a major review for the International Organization of Consumer Unions, one of the world's largest NGOs.

AND NEEDS SURVEYS
A computerized survey of MANAGEMENT TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT NEEDS has been used in many parts of the world. In 1988 we produced a version in Swahili in order to survey several thousand managers and supervisors in the Tanzanian public service. In 1993 it was used to survey managers in the Bermuda public service, the results of which led to a pioneering Management Development program designed and delivered by SEQUUS directors.

POLAND AND EASTERN EUROPE
A new chapter in this exciting story is being written in Poland. Brian Trump has been actively involved in management development and customer service training for banks, hotels and other organizations through 1998 and 1999 and is just launching another set of workshops for a large construction and engineering firm.

GUYANA
Our latest international project is getting started in Guyana where we will serve as the Canadian project partner in a CIDA-funded institution building program at CARICOM.

PRAIRIE INTERNATIONAL CONSULTING COOPERATIVE
In 1996 Sequus and a group of other consulting firms created a consortium to collaborate on large international development projects. To learn more about this unique organization click here.

PHILIPPINES
In the late 1990's Sequus directors began working with CIDA's Local Government Support Program (LGSP) where the focus was on enterprise development in the private and public sectors.  With LGSP now in its second phase, Sequus continues to work in the public enterprise sector. In 2002, Agriteam Canada (the Canadian Executing Agency for LGSP) invited Sequus to develop a framework for the development of public economic enterprise in the Philippines.  The work is ongoing in 2003.
