We are proud to announce that the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters have joined with LSAM as sponsors of the Management Development Program.


This is a certificate program requiring 80 out of 112 hours of training to receive a certificate. At the end of the program, the participants who wish to receive a certificate will need to complete a project using the skills taught during the 12-module program. There will also be a Public Speaking component of the program. Opportunities will be provided throughout the series to speak on a topic of choice. Persons who are taking the full program will be required to make a presentation on their project at the graduation session.

MODULE ONE: Introduction to Leadership and Management The Basics
This module is the first in the series and should be attended by everyone who wants to receive the full benefits.

The goals for the introductory module are…1. To explain the full program. 2.To meet the other participants and form into learning teams. 3. To introduce you to the basics of management theory. 4. To ensure that the roles and responsibilities of a leader/manager are fully understood. 5. To introduce the concept of Performance Management and 6. To introduce the Public Speaking and Project requirements of the full program.This module will cover the full range of management and leadership responsibilities from planning, budgeting and scheduling; to organizing & staffing; to directing and supporting staff; and to controlling and problem solving. This module introduces the core concepts of leadership style, shows how individuals and teams develop and allows for practice of a Performance Management discussion between a leader and a follower. This module will cover the basics of training new staff, goal setting, performance planning and review; assigning tasks; monitoring performance; dealing with performance problems; discipline, and other situations where the leader/manager is required to direct the work of others.Participants in the full program will be provided with a format and samples for Public Speaking and for Project Assignments.

MODULE TWO: Leadership and Management continued – (It is recommended that you take module 3 as well)
This module builds on module 1 and looks closer at performance management. The second half of the module examines the difference between leading and managing and helps participants determine when to lead and when to manage.
DURATION:One full day. (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate.)
INSTRUCTOR:Al Holmes
LEARNING GOALS and CONTENT:The learning goals for this session are:1. Apply a situational theory to Performance Management.2. Understand the difference between Leading and Managing3. Know one’s personal preference for Leading or Managing based on test results and individual feedback.4. Be able to diagnose organization situations to determine whether leadership or management is needed.

MODULE THREE: Personality in the Workplace - (builds on learning goals from modules 1 & 2)
This module builds on the Introductory module and relies on an understanding of situational leadership and adds personality theory to your repertoire.
DURATION:One full day. (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate.)
INSTRUCTOR:Ralph Brown
LEARNING GOALS and CONTENT:Personality theory is at the core of this module. Participants complete a self-assessment instrument and then score it in the classroom. The learning goals are to…1. Understand Personality Theory, 2. Know the four basic personality types and how to quickly identify each, 3. Know the Strengths and Limitations of each type. 4. Know how to interact, influence and communicate effectively with each type both inside and outside of the organization. 5. Identify sources of conflict between Personality Types and how to reduce or avoid it. And 6. Get an assessment of your own Personality Type based on test scores and feedback from others.

MODULE FOUR: What Every Supervisor needs to know about Human Resource Management

DURATION:One full day (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate)
INSTRUCTOR:Barbara Bowes
LEARNING GOALS and CONTENT:To introduce you to the basics of a full range of Human Resource responsibilities including recruitment and selection of staff, employment standards, Human Rights legislation, Worklife balance, diversity in the workplace, discipline, termination, career management and so on.

MODULE FIVE: Managing Conflict in the Workplace
This module looks at lateral relationships and helps participants seek win-win solutions to conflict and bargaining.
DURATION:One full day (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate)
INSTRUCTOR:Ralph Brown
LEARNING GOALS AND CONTENT:The goal of this session is to equip participants to be able to better assess and respond to workplace conflicts that they are both directly and indirectly involved in. Specifically participants will have the opportunity to develop:1.Awareness of the complex dynamics of conflict  2.An increased ability to screen and assess conflict situations3.Understanding of the patterns of conflict behaviour4.Communication skills to facilitate the resolution of conflict5.The ability to respond instead of reacting to conflict situations6.Familiarity with an interpersonal problem-solving model 7.Awareness of how to coach others to resolve their own conflicts

MODULE SIX: Financial Management
This module is designed to help non-financial managers understand the basics of financial management.
DURATION:One full day  (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate.)
INSTRUCTOR:Gord Kraemer or Ralph Brown (To be determined)
LEARNING GOALS AND CONTENT:This session will cover three basic financial management tasks that frontline managers are expected to be able to do.1. BUDGETING: A budgeting component is included in this program. It is designed to help participants forecast the cost associated with a project or a new venture. Our budgeting exercise gives the participants a very real perspective. Initially a presentation regarding "what budgeting is" and "how it helps" is undertaken. This explanation is followed by how budgeting relates to the other activities in the organization, the components of good budgeting and some of the common problems encountered in the process. This component is reinforced with an exercise that can be increased in difficulty to suit the participants. The above concepts are reviewed and the participant's questions are answered.2. MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS WITH FINANCIAL ANALYSIS:  Participants often find themselves making proposals to senior management. This module will help them make the financial argument to back up their recommendations. Break-even analysis is presented both algebraically and graphically. Participant questions are answered and a case is completed in participant groups. Investment analysis techniques including the payback method, internal rate of return and discounted cash flow analysis (NPV) are explained, questioned and used in cases both individually and in groups. 3.  FORECASTING RETURN ON INVESTMENT: This module will provide you with assistance to calculate a Return on Investment from a Project. Those who intend to graduate will be required to submit a project that includes a projection or an actual return on investment.Please bring a calculator

MODULE SEVEN: Project Management
This module provides the basics of Project Management.
DURATION:Two days. This module counts as 16 hours towards the certificate.

LEARNING GOALS AND CONTENT:Goals: To understand the complete project cycle and be able to manage a project according to the best available principles and practices.Content: Project phases; project Roles; Preparing a project plan - Project charter; Milestone schedule; Supporting action plans; Budget requirements; Risk Analysis; Presenting a project charter; Managing the project-Resolving project problems at all levels; Responding to project changes; Reporting project status; project evaluation. The final ½ day will introduce you to Project Management software.

MODULE EIGHT: Problem-solving and Decision Making
This module zeroes in on the leader/manager as problem-solver and decision-maker.
DURATION:One full day. (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate.)

MODULE NINE: Report Writing
This module deals with a basic skill required by most managers in today's technological world.
DURATION:Two full days (Counts as 16 hours towards certificate)
INSTRUCTOR:Ron Blicq and Lisa Moretto
LEARNING GOALS AND CONTENT:By the end of the course participants will be able to:1.Identify primary information and focus readers' attention on it,2.Write convincingly and persuasively,3.Create letters, memorandums, reports, and proposals that consistently achieve the intended impact, and4.Present an effective report or project proposal at a meeting.The emphasis to be placed on each topic will depend on pre-course consultation with the client and specific interests elicited from course participants at the start of the course.  The proposed topics will include techniques for*Organizing the writing task,*Identifying primary information & directing readers' attention to it,*Arranging facts for maximum impact,*Writing action-getting letters and memorandums, writing effective email messages,*Writing short informal reports,*Planning and writing longer informal and semiformal reports,*Planning and writing informal and semiformal proposals,*Preparing and presenting a proposal at a meeting, and*Sharpening one's personal writing style to create a strong, effective presence.

MODULE TEN: Emotional Intelligence
DURATION:One full day (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate)
INSTRUCTOR:Heather Erhard:Heather is a new instructor this year. Heather is the Director of Erhard Associates, an organization dedicated to providing high quality, results oriented management consulting and training to private, public and non-profit sectors. Areas of particular focus include strategic planning, team building, board development, and leadership training designed to enhance individual, team and organizational effectiveness.
LEARNING GOALS AND CONTENT:Morning Session: ·What is Emotional Intelligence and why should I be interested?·The case for self-awareness and self-management: Don’t be one of the “smart” people who fail!·Use the BarOn EQ-I model to analyze your Emotional Intelligence. Afternoon Session:·Receive the results of the EQ-I Inventory. You are not required to share the details of the report in the session.·Review tools and strategies to enhance your Emotional Intelligence to improve your career development.
PREREQUISITES:Note: All participants must complete the BarOn EQ-1 questionnaire two weeks in advance of the session. The results will be presented in the afternoon session.



MODULE ELEVEN: Building High Performance Teams
This module is designed for those who want to explore teams as the new basis for structuring organizations.
DURATION:One full day (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate)
INSTRUCTOR:Al Holmes
LEARNING GOALS AND CONTENT:GOALS: To understand why teams have become the new organizational unit. To understand work teams & learning teams. To explore the concept of ‘self-managing’ teams. Participants will learn what makes a High Performing Team, how to be an effective Team Member and how to be an effective Team Facilitator/Leader. You will learn how teams develop and grow, how to sustain a team and how to deal with team decline. You will also learn when teams are not advisable.
PREREQUISITES:Module one (It is recommended that you take modules 2 & 3 as well)



MODULE TWELVE: Program Review, project preparation and presentation planning
This module is designed for those who will graduate. It is time to develop your project into its final stages, develop your presentation materials, learn how to use Power Point to make your presentation and review the fundamentals of presentation skills..
DURATION:One full day (Counts as 8 hours towards certificate)
INSTRUCTOR:Al Holmes
LEARNING GOALS AND CONTENT:In this session the learning teams formed in module one will meet with assistance from the instructor to prepare their final projects and get ready for the presentations in the graduation session. The instructor will go back through the program highlights to help ensure that projects are built around the entire program. The learning groups will have time to complete work on their projects and determine what will be presented on graduation day, how it will be presented and who will do what part.



GRADUATION
This morning is set-aside for those who have taken the full program and have enough hours to receive a certificate. An overview of the full program will be provided. Each graduate will present his or her project. Feedback will be provided on both the project and the presentation. Representatives of participating companies and the program funders will be present. Please note that these presentations will be video taped and each presenter will receive a CD of their presentation.
